JDC Began Work in the Region: 1914
While the smallest global region geographically, Europe contains the largest number of countries that benefit from JDC’s work. Many of Europe’s Jewish communities have built vibrant existences in the wake of the Holocaust and the fall of communism, although significant challenges remain. JDC addresses the pressing material needs of Jews most at risk in Central and Eastern Europe: impoverished Jewish elderly—primarily Holocaust survivors—and needy Jewish children and families.
Concurrently, JDC acts as a catalyst for community development and Jewish renewal in Europe. Whether giving young leaders opportunities to connect with their peers across geographic borders, or helping Jews throughout the region learn about Jewish traditions within and outside the walls of Jewish community centers, or providing Jewish camping programs, family retreats, and grassroots learning experiences, JDC ensures a connection to Jewish life and culture for future generations of European Jews.
