JDC Began Work in the Region: During
World War II

In general, Jewish life and traditions resonate strongly among Jews living in Latin America. However, because challenging economic developments in the region over the past decade (in Argentina, particularly) have threatened the well-being of Jews there, JDC has helped mobilize a variety of new welfare programs to respond to critical needs. Partnering with local Jewish organizations in Argentina and Uruguay, JDC’s humanitarian response to those countries’ economic crises has brought community stability and new opportunities for employment—so much so that JDC is phasing down its emergency programs and transitioning back to its traditional role as a consultant to the region’s Jewish communities. In Latin America, JDC is promoting efforts that foster self-sufficiency—such as leadership training and community development—and is working with community institutions to further strengthen Jewish life. Still, JDC will continue to provide aid for communities and individuals in crisis and in need of basic services.
